“Right now I’m reading a book from mega-selling fantasy author George R. R. Martin. The following is a passage where he is writing from the point of view of a woman — always a tough thing for men to do. The girl is on her way to a key confrontation, and the narrator describes it thusly:

“When she went to the stables, she wore faded sandsilk pants and woven grass sandals. Her small breasts moved freely beneath a painted Dothraki vest …”

That’s written from the woman’s point of view. Yes, when a male writes a female, he assumes that she spends every moment thinking about the size of her breasts and what they are doing. “Janet walked her boobs across the city square. ‘I can see them staring at my boobs,’ she thought, boobily.” He assumes that women are thinking of themselves the same way we think of them.”

I’m not even going to remotely try to argue that the excerpt is not a poor attempt to write from a female POV (because it’s abyssmal) or that an inherent degree of misogyny isn’t present in most media and PARTICULARLY obvious in the fantasy genre (because it is)…

BUT

hoisting George R.R. Martin up as a REPRESENTATIVE male writer in this context is like bringing a cannon to a knife fight. I forced myself to get through book one of a song of ice and fire and, unless there’s a rather large divergence in later books, Martin’s female characters appear to either be “VIRGINAL GODDESS’ TAKE CHARGE OF STRONG MEN VIA SUDDEN UNDERSTANDING OF THE POWER OF THEIR HOOHOO” or “WOMEN WHO ARE EASILY FOOLED BY STIRRINGS IN THE VAGINES FOR JERKS AND GET PEOPLE KILLED”, with a healthy dose of “BLARGH MY LIFE IS NOW FOR MY CHILDREN, NUDE, NAKED, TITS,TITS, TITS, GIVE ME PRESENTS, WOE IS ME I HAVE MISCALCULATED, WHAT LITTLE AGENCY I HAD IS GONE AND NOW I AM MORE OF AN OBJECT THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT POSSIBLE.”

anyway, the point is, using him as an example is sort of going for low-hanging fruit.

Trolls! Oh man this part took a while, thanks everybody for bearing with me. I still need to tweak a lot of the progression as I was just sort of eyeballing it the entire way, but I tried to make it at least a bit consistent. It’s really difficult to emulate camera movement like this, but the point of this project is to try new things. Next update will have the music added! Animated in Photoshop CS5.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is behind the only major technical change in theTitanic re-release

It took James Cameron 60 weeks to prepare Titanic for its rerelease, but apart from remastering the original at 4k resolution and converting it to stereoscopic 3D, nothing about the movie has really changed.

Well, almost nothing.

According to Cameron: “Neil deGrasse Tyson sent me quite a snarky email saying that, at that time of year [April 15, at 4:20 am], in that position in the Atlantic in 1912, when Rose is lying on the piece of driftwood and staring up at the stars, that is not the star field she would have seen.”

“And with my reputation as a perfectionist, I should have known that and I should have put the right star field in. So I said ‘All right, send me the right stars for that exact time and I’ll put it in the movie.’”

So Tyson did just that, and Cameron re-shot the scene. According to the Telegraph , it is the only major technical change in the film’s re-release.
